Welcome to Baya Haus
Baya Haus is a curated collection of luxury art prints, co-created with master artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Founded by Ruby Grushkowitz in the Pacific Northwest, Baya Haus was born from her passion for discovering and preserving ancient art forms.

Our mission is simple: to learn traditional art techniques directly from the communities that keep them alive, and to share these stories with the world through beautifully crafted artwork.

To launch Baya Haus, Ruby began with Mithila art, an ancient painting tradition from India that dates back to the 8th century BC. She worked closely with local artisans to learn the techniques firsthand and co-create each piece in the collection. The result is a body of work that blends cultural authenticity with thoughtful collaboration.

Each piece in the Baya Haus collection is handmade using natural pigments and authentic methods. From colorful scenes of daily life to intricate depictions of nature, every artwork tells a meaningful story.

Whether you're a collector, a design enthusiast, or simply looking for something special to enrich your space, Baya Haus offers timeless beauty with purpose.

About the art

Mithila art is a traditional art form that has been passed down through generations. Many artists work on this art form in their local communities. The origin of this art form can be dated back to 8th century BC in the ancient region of Mithila, now located in the present-day India. With intricate and detailed designs, this art form tends to feature images of nature and every day life. The colors used are natural pigments. Each piece is meticulously crafted by hand and takes multiple days and sometimes weeks to complete. Training to paint Mithila starts at a young age and is passed down through generations.

The use of bright and bold colors is a defining characteristic of Mithila art, which gives it a distinct eye catching appeal. Red, yellow, blue, green, and black are the most commonly used colors. Red symbolizes fertility and marriage, while yellow is associated with happiness and auspiciousness. Blue is often used to depict Lord Krishna, while green represents nature and new beginnings. Black is used for outlines and to create contrast.

Pigments used in this art form are derived from various natural sources.

Haldi (turmeric): Turmeric is used to create a bright yellow color.

Kumkum (Vermillion): Vermillion is used to create a bright red color.

Neel (Indigo): used to create rich blue.

Geru (Red Ochre): Red Ochre is used to create a range of reds and browns.

Bhojpatra (Birch bark): Birch bark is used to create a beige or ivory color.

Chandan (Sandalwood): Sandalwood is used to create a light yellow color.

Maida (Lime): Lime is used to create white color.

Despite the complexity of the designs, there is a simplicity to Mithila art that is truly captivating. In a world where so much art is now computer generated and generic, Mithila art stands out as a shining example of the power of traditional art forms. Its intricate designs, bold colors, and meaningful symbolisms make it a truly unique and inspiring art form that will continue to captivate and inspire people for generations to come.
